Personality Bio
Dave Flavin Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Alaska? I was born on May 9th, 1960 in Chicago, IL. When I was five we moved to Arlington Heights, a Chicago suburb about 25 miles northwest of the city. I attended St. Mary's School in Buffalo Grove, Il, and then graduated from John Hersey High School in 1978. When I was in the 2nd grade I was cast in the school play as a tree! I fell in love with the theatre and appeared in numerous plays throughout grade and high school, and after doing some dinner theatre in Chicago, I decided to major in theatre at Southern Illinois University where I graduated with a BA in 1987. I moved back to Chicago for a couple of years when in the fall of 1990, I decided to move to Alaska. My brother Frank had already been in Anchorage for years and I first visited him here in 1977. Moving to Alaska seemed like a great adventure and so I quit my job in Chicago, loaded up my 1985 VW Jetta and starting driving west. It was the best road trip of my life. Along the way I stopped and played baseball on " The Field of Dreams" in Iowa, visited The Badlands and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, then The Little Bighorn Battlefield and Yellowstone National Park in Montana before meeting my brother in Seattle. Then we drove up on The Cassiar Highway and I arrived in Anchorage to stay on Oct 3rd 1990. How did you get a job in radio?
It happened almost by accident, and then I worked my way up the ladder slowly: I had only been in Anchorage for a few days when I was introduced to Mark Murphy who was the programming director for KGOT. After chatting with Mark for a few minutes he asked me if I would like to work part-time on the radio. I was nervous, but said "sure"! For over a year I worked from 6am until 10am on sundays--- then eventually started getting more and more weekend hours and was occasionally asked to fill-in for someone who was on vacation. I got my first full-time gig in 1997, working on KENI in the afternoons and KASH in the evening. Then I was offered the mid-day shift at KGOT and had a lot of fun there especially during "The Retro Lunch" when I got to play hits from the 70's and 80's. That was when "Stu" Bill Stewart started calling me "Disco Dave". In July of 2000, I moved one studio down the hall to Magic 98.9. Your Favorite Sports Teams?
My parents were devoted Chicago Cubs fans, and I inherited the curse! There is nothing in sports that I would like to see more than The Chicago Cubs winning the world series. It has to happen sometime, right? I've always been a big sports fan and I love all Chicago teams, Da' Cubs, Da' Bears, Da' Bulls, and Da' Blackhawks. Used to drive down to old Comiskey Park to see da' White Sox, too. When I was about nine or ten I developed a love for the Miami Dolphins because I thought they had cool uniforms, and I had seen dolphins at the zoo!(Haven't been such a big Dolphins fan since they forced out Don Shula.) Fantasy date?
Happily married to my wife Diana, but if I could go back in time, I would love to have dinner with a young Ingrid Bergman!
First Job?
Was pretty cool……….ran the scoreboard for junior hockey games.
I was only 14 at the time and I think I was paid $1.50 a game and I loved it.
Worst Job?
I have two:
1) Worked two days as a telemarketer in Chicago. I quit when I was told to record phone calls even when the other party declined permission to be recorded.
2) Managed a pawn shop for a month. Didn't like the nature of the business as it seemed to prey on poor people.
I love radio but…
Seriously, I have often dreamed of going back to college to get my masters, and then teaching theatre at the college level.
It's tough to pick an all-time favorite, but if I had to choose one it would have to be “Citizen Kane”….
Orson Welles is a hero of mine and I have a 8x10 of him in my office.
What a voice!
2nd place would be Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” with James Stewart and Kim Novak.

I would have to say “Why” by Yoko Ono. Have you ever heard that?.....Trust me, you don't want to. I’d love to meet…

Favorite TV shows: Other than sports, I don't really watch a lot of TV shows, but I've loved " The Simpsons" ever since they came on! Sometimes I feel that I AM Homer Simpson! (D'oh!) Other animated shows I like are " Family Guy" ( Brian the dog cracks me up!), "South Park", and "Futurama". I do enjoy watching the re-runs of "Seinfeld" and "Everybody Loves Raymond".
One Million or a kiss with Faith Hill?
Hey were both happily married!
Show Me The Money!
One thing my Mom didn’t know about me?
Are you kidding? My Mom knew me better that I know myself…..no foolin’!
Family…
My lovely wife Diana (married since 1995) and daughter Pamela.
Our beloved pets: Maggie, our dog, and Sam the kitty.

Dave and Maggie at Westchester LagoonWe also have a large 55 gallon aquarium that has been up and running since 1996. My brother Frank has lived in Anchorage for many years, and has a very successful photography business: " Flavin Photography". We have two sisters who still live in the Chicago area. Mom passed away in 2000, and Dad lives in Southern Illinois. Favorite Foods…
Cheeseburgers followed by Chocolate for dessert! A food from Chicago I really miss is the italian beef sandwich! And don't get me started about Chicago pizza!!!!!
Favorite Recording Artists... My all time favorite group would be The Beatles. Also a big fan of early Genesis, Peter Gabriel, The Who, Neil Young, and the best songwriter of our lifetime...Mr. Bob Dylan.
